I recently overheard a friend once mention that he is an addict of the very popular social network site, Facebook . Many people will no doubt be able to identify with this situation as a full hour in a day hardly passes by without checking the updates posted by friends, colleagues connected to them from all countries around the world.

Social networking sites are so significant such that when one of the sites that have a large membership from around the world hit a 200 million membership mark in early 2009 (membership size is now 300million), it made a big deal out of it by splashing the figures all over pages of the media all over the world. In Nigeria as at July 2009, there were close to 800,000 Nigerians with Facebook membership.

The nearest to today’s social networking website was called “Friends Re-United” and was developed in 1999 as a tool to re-connect old friends who attended same schools or grew up in United Kingdom and had lost connection. Social networking websites morphed from online communities such as forums dedicated to certain issues and started from popular sites such as Yahoo Geocities, which enabled different communities made up of people with several interests to link up each other. Websites such as Friends Reunited were built for initially were those who attended schools in the pre-internet age and pre-mobile phone age, as they were unable to exchange contact details that were not fixed to a particular spot such as fixed landlines. As these friends moved residences, most friends lost touch and thus created the fertile ground to create the very first social networking sites to reconnect such friends as well as relatives who had moved to very distant areas.

Friends Reunited was initially very successful netting over 20 million members in United Kingdom at its peak in 2003, however, its business model was soon to hit a brick wall as the income made from attracting corporate advertising was unable sustain business operational expenses. Its business executives were able to convince a less-knowledgeable board of ITV Communications, United Kingdom to purchase the business in 2004 for a princely sum.

Wikipedia lists 158 active social networking sites on its list of websites. Popular social networking sites include Linkedin - business networking, Orkut - Google owned social site, Black planet - African American networking, Twitter - microblogging site and many more.

Most of these websites are international in nature and membership is usually in hundreds of thousands, or the website serves several interests for members.

As you set out to start that brilliant internet based business, there is the need to ask your self and your team about the exact ways that business attracted, for your product or service, is processed. This provides a problem by itself as it involves a manual process that has to be constantly monitored. For a business that processes 20 orders a day, it is easy to monitor bank payments for that number of orders, however when business suddenly booms, how effective will the resources on ground be to handle such increases?

- How flexible or dynamic is your process i.e. if your business is involved in the online sales of auto accessories and you are able to get access to purchase car spare parts, how fast can your team work out an agreement whether to include this and integrate it into your business offering otherwise, turn the opportunity away. At a particular stage of Bringitbay , it was obvious that we had created a platform that was very important for customers and they were getting really used to us providing them service for delivery of apparel especially clothes and shoes from online stores in United Kingdom. The phenomenom of the world wide web might not be fully appreciated until people take a look at the the books of companies such as Google, Yahoo, Amazon e.t.c., purely internet companies that have built reputations in the corporate world as solid profit or dividend earners. Sadly, the phenomenom of the internet, though well known in Nigeria, is viewed with a lot of suspicion due to the prevalence of scammers who have made online activities, emails and fraudulent activities online, synonymous with Nigeria. As a result of this mistrust, the ease and convinience associated with moving a business from brick and mortar, offline and manual to being automated and online, simply by making a lot of repeated tasks very easy to achieve for the business, cannot be transferred to businesses based in Nigeria.

Coupled with this problem of mistrust, key issues which are headaches for intending Nigerian entrepreneurs looking to take advantage of this lucrative method of doing business, is the lack of adequate internet connection such as broadband as well as stable eletricity. These two factors are so key such that their absence of inadequate provision renders the possiblity of embarking on the business, a futility.

As the objective of any business will always be to make a tidy profit, there is also the need to consistently modify the ideas and business models to be accomodated to the circumstances and environment in which the business is in. Several alternatives to broadband connection exist in the country such as the more popular carry around dungles which are mobile internet access devices that can be used for accessing the internet.

As regards the issue of trust, the inability to receive payments online remains a very ugly blight, as major international cards, though now available through Nigerian banks, are not effective for making purchases online from Nigerian stores or non-Nigerian stores. Fraudulent transactions are synonymous with Nigeria, thus majority of Nigerian and non-Nigerian sites do not even accept cards this defeating the purpose of shopping online. This throws up a lot of challenges however, alternative payment solutions exists such as integrating Interswitch payment as an option amongst others such as eTranzact, and cash deposits.

The bottom line here is that on an annual basis, Nigeria’s inability to partake fully in global e-commerce means it loses out on a business model that generates in excess of $500bn alone in worldwide sales for 2008 (quote) and is expected to quadruple by 2012 as more products and services are made available for purchase via online sales.

While under intense pressure to gain academic excellence in the past 12 months, I realised that Nigerians have not been able to enjoy the fruits of the global phenomenom, e-commerce. Many Nigerian sites have in the past attempted to come up with e-commerce business models and have not made much of mark. While pondering over this, I observed that many organisations in the West and albeit large parts of the world refused to ship to African addresses out of numerous excuses such as "import duty", phoney customers and the likes. This greatly hampered a lot of genuine Nigerians who are eager to shop for their tastes online from the comfort of their homes and offices.

Of course then there is the very serious issue of intent to defraud which a small cabal of dishonest persons have caused the image of Nigeria and Nigerians to be horrendously tainted. You only need to mention Nigeria to invite serious and suspicious stares from people (even Nigerians who prefer not to be associated with Nigeria!).

In this light, I commenced a study about the Nigerian Apparel Retail industry and the results showed that many people in Nigeria (Lagos especially - over 90% of my result came from Lagos) were not satisfied with several aspects of what is currently available. I must say I underestimated the time I needed to dedicate to my studies. I believed I would be able to cope with my studies while filling my blog with inspiring digital wealth opportunities. Alas, that has not been particularly easy for me! I daresay that I will strive to continue to fill this blog in order to inspire people and open minds to various opportunities that exist online.

Recently i attended Business Startup, the United Kingdom's biggest event for small businesses at Olympia, London, which highlighted opportunities for Business startups, social entrepreneurs and overseas business opportunities. The word borrowing connotes so much for some people and I am privileged to meet influential people who are very averse to borrowing or which ever flowery term used to describe it. In this post, I intent to highlight major portions of the book as it entails successful ways of borrowing.

Chapter 1 – Know Your Wants

"Inexperience with borrowing procedures often creates resentment and bitterness."......."It is important that you realise that the bank lending you funds is not doing you a favour, it is in the business of intermediation which requires trust from each party, i.e. the depositor on one hand, and the borrower on the other hand. To ensure that the bank earns the trust of both parties, it has to ensure that controls are put in place that ensures the total commitment of both parties. The conditions found in an offer letter, though negotiable most times, seek to ensure discipline of the borrowing party.

Knowledge of the financial facts of business life could have saved........ the embarrassment of losing their tempers. Even more important, such information would have helped them to borrow money at a time when their businesses needed it badly."

Lesson from Chapter 1: If you approach a bank without knowing what you want the funds for and how you intend to repay, then you will not be taken seriously.

Chapter 2 – Know Their Wants

Lesson 3: To be taken serously, have a financial record showing the financial health of your business or self handy either as a bank statement or at least 6 months unaudited financial statement showing the figures of your business. The banker or lender sees figures, nothing more, nothing less.

Wow,

It's two weeks now that i collected my first $6,000 and im already on standby (level 7) again ready to "hammer" another $6,000! Its been quite an age ive been able to dedicate a few hours to posting new comments. Events have unfortunately taken up my time and i decided that i would do something about this this evening due to a lot of misconceptions about the MLM or network marketing concept. Sometime in October 2006, I re-visited a prospective customer i had been trying to sign on for over a year. At that point in time, he offered me no hope of the account being opened. Rather he offered me a copy (free) of his monthly success and motivaltional publication. Of course, i was not happy! How short-sighted i was to be. The magazine not only exposed me to tremendous opportunities, it in addition, awoke the giant in me that had been in slumber for over 10 years!

I read about a certain CD which offered fantastic opportunities to individuals interested in earning income from as many streams as possible, you name it, online, hobbies, and a whole number of wonderful things. In the search for brighter opportunities, i bought this CD and stayed awake all night (till about 3am) rummaging through the contents. I am yet to complete going through the CD as it holds very large amounts of information, part of which was responsible for a life changing phase of my life.

The book i proudly display on this blog, is a testimony to that CD and how it changed my life. I was able to put it together using very simple principle described in the book - fuel your passion - and earn income from it. The author(s) of the CD described a situatuion where income can be earned from different forms of writing, be it as columnists, as how to do books....etc

I tried doing mine from the "How to do" angle dwelling on a well-known and well researched topic - Banking. I have other titles in the works and should have them out at the right time. I started writing over 10 years ago and have published some of my short stories in various magazines. I used this meidum to earn passive income and i must say, it has earned me recognition from my peers and well-wishers alike. I was able to choose writing for earining my passive income becasue not only did i have it as a hobby and passion, it was also able to fit into my work schedule.

I daresay, that you start your search for something which can earn you passive income while you toil at your day job to enable you save for the day you decide to quit.
